Glass office partitions: what to plan before you install

A practical guide to aluminium-framed glass partitions for offices and home studies, covering layouts, doors, glass choices, privacy and sound.

Glass partitions divide a room without losing the light. They are common in offices and increasingly in homes, where a study or work nook needs a door but a solid wall would make the space feel small. Here is what to plan before you install.

For a look at the pros and cons, see our earlier article: are office glass partitions worth it?

Framed or frameless?

Aluminium-framed partitions are sturdy, cost less than most frameless systems, and make it easy to add doors, locks and sections of frosted glass. Slim frames keep the look clean. Frameless glass looks minimal but needs more precise structure and usually costs more.

Choose the door

  • Hinged doors are simple and seal well, but need space to swing.
  • Sliding doors save floor space and suit narrow rooms and corridors.
  • Double doors work for meeting rooms and wide openings.

Glass options

  • Toughened safety glass is the standard for partitions and doors.
  • Laminated or acoustic glass reduces sound transfer, useful for offices and calls.
  • Frosted bands or film give privacy at seated eye level while keeping light above.

Privacy and sound

Glass reduces noise but does not stop it like a solid wall. If quiet matters, plan for laminated glass, sealed door edges and a partition that runs right up to the ceiling.

Before you install

  1. Check the ceiling and floor are level enough to fix to, or plan for packing.
  2. Decide where power points, switches and data need to go.
  3. Allow for air-conditioning vents and sprinklers on both sides.
  4. For commercial fit-outs, check any building or landlord approvals.

We measure on site and give you a clear quote with the glass, frame and door types listed, so there are no surprises.

Questions

Do glass partitions block sound?

They reduce it. Thicker laminated or acoustic glass and well-sealed frames and doors make the biggest difference. If privacy for calls matters, tell us early so we can specify the right glass and seals.

Can glass partitions be installed in a home?

Yes. Aluminium-framed glass partitions work well for home studies, dividing a large living area or closing off a stair void, while keeping the light.
